Director's Statement
Standing next to witness stands for many years as an interpreter, I’ve learned about the horrors of testifying in court, especially when the stakes are high: losing the right to drive, losing a house, a business, or even worse the custody of one’s children. Every court proceeding is inherently suspenseful. To this I trace the genesis of Ghost Light: the story of Marion, a widowed actress obsessed with the supernatural, forced to testify in court in order to hold onto her playhouse. With the added themes of betrayal and gaslighting, my film is a modern throwback to the suspense classics of the 40’s and 50’s. The subplot of actresses bonding to fight and survive was informed by my life experiences living in Los Angeles since emigrating to the United States in 1997. Will Marion’s extreme beliefs and unending love for her late husband prove her undoing? Who can she trust? And who can trust her? The truth will come to light. Ghost Light.
