When the mayor leaves the fist meeting, Richie, Sydney, and Irving start talking about “the deal” even though the mayor is still likely within earshot. One could believe that Richie, the sloppy FBI agent, might be so careless, but not the other two, who pride themselves on doing things “from the feet up.”

Also upon the mayor’s departure, Irvine’s friend follows him out in an attempt to persuade him to return. Irving leaves the room shortly thereafter with the same purpose. He finds the mayor downstairs by himself. The friend is nowhere to be found. Given the stakes, it is hard to imagine the friend so easily giving up.
